 CHF/EUR: Should You Exchange Everything at Once or in Several Transactions?
===========================================================================

  By Juliette Kreda · September 23, 2026

 You have CHF 10,000 to convert into euros.

A question quickly comes to mind: should you exchange the entire amount today, or spread the conversion over several transactions?

The answer may seem simple: wait until the CHF/EUR exchange rate becomes more favourable.

The problem? No one can know with certainty what the exchange rate will be tomorrow, next week, or three months from now.

Rather than trying to find the perfect moment, it can be more useful to understand the advantages and limitations of the different ways to exchange your money.

Option 1: Exchange the Entire Amount at Once
--------------------------------------------

Let’s say you have CHF 10,000 available and already know that you will need this amount in euros.

You can choose to convert the entire amount immediately.

The main advantage is simple: you know straight away how many euros you have available.

Once the conversion has been completed, future fluctuations in the CHF/EUR exchange rate will no longer affect that amount.

This can be particularly useful when you have a specific upcoming expense, such as:

- buying a property;
- paying a large invoice;
- purchasing a vehicle;
- moving abroad;
- paying university fees;
- paying a supplier.

However, if the exchange rate becomes more favourable a few days later, you will not benefit from the change.

On the other hand, if the rate becomes less favourable, you will already have completed your conversion.

Option 2: Exchange the Amount Gradually
---------------------------------------

Another approach is to split the amount.

Instead of converting CHF 10,000 all at once, you could make several conversions at different times.

This means you are not dependent on a single exchange rate.

Some conversions may take place at a more favourable rate, while others may be made at a less favourable one.

Ultimately, your effective exchange rate will reflect the different conversions you have made.

This approach can be particularly relevant for people who regularly manage money across two currencies.

This is the case for many cross-border workers who receive their salary in CHF but have most of their expenses in EUR.

Rather than trying to predict the market every month, the amount converted can be adjusted according to actual needs: rent, mortgage payments, bills, savings or everyday expenses.

Why Is It So Difficult to Wait for the “Best Exchange Rate”?
------------------------------------------------------------

Because the EUR/CHF exchange rate is constantly changing.

Decisions by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and the European Central Bank (ECB), inflation, interest rates, economic data and geopolitical events can all influence the value of the Swiss franc and the euro.

Financial markets also tend to react very quickly to new information.

Waiting can therefore work in your favour in some situations, but it can just as easily have the opposite effect.

The rate may become more attractive after you decide to wait, or it may move in the other direction.

Trying to systematically find the perfect time to exchange your money ultimately means trying to anticipate the market.

The Amount You Exchange Also Matters
------------------------------------

A small change in the exchange rate may seem insignificant.

But the larger the amount, the greater the potential impact.

For a conversion of a few hundred francs, the difference may remain relatively small.

For CHF 10,000, CHF 50,000 or CHF 100,000, even a small percentage difference can represent a significant amount.

That is why it is important to look not only at the exchange rate displayed, but also at the total cost of the conversion.

Remember: The Exchange Rate Is Only Part of the Cost
----------------------------------------------------

Comparing exchange rates alone can be misleading.

Depending on the provider, other costs may also apply:

exchange spreads, conversion fees, transfer fees, account fees or subscriptions.

A rate that is very close to the interbank rate does not necessarily mean that the overall conversion is cheaper.

So the right question is not simply:

“What exchange rate am I being offered?”

But rather:

“How much does this conversion actually cost me overall?”

So, Should You Exchange Everything at Once or Split the Conversion?
-------------------------------------------------------------------

There is no single answer that works for everyone.

If you need a specific amount in euros by a certain date, knowing the final amount immediately can be useful.

If your needs are regular and spread over time, making several conversions can reduce your dependence on a single point in the market.

In either case, the goal does not necessarily have to be securing the best exchange rate of the year.

What matters is choosing an approach that matches your needs while keeping the overall cost of your currency conversions under control.

What About MyBestFX?
--------------------

With MyBestFX, you can exchange CHF and EUR online and see the applicable exchange rate before confirming your transaction.
